Sunday Morning Session
A Peculiar Treasure
Elder Alan R. Walker
Of the Seventy
The Lord declared that His people would be a peculiar treasure unto Him if they would obey His voice and keep His covenant.
Overview
Elder Alan R. Walker teaches that in scripture the Lord calls covenant-keepers His “peculiar treasure.” Using the Lord’s words to Moses as a pattern for us today, he emphasizes two conditions, obey the Savior’s voice and keep our covenants. He explains that God’s acceptance is not about instant perfection but about honest, broken hearts, contrite spirits, and a willingness to observe covenants even when sacrifice is required; as we do, the Lord strengthens us with covenant power and helps us endure trials with hope.
Three Key Takeaways
- 1The Lord’s promise to be a “peculiar treasure” is tied to two conditions: obey His voice and keep His covenants; this is how a covenant people rises above the world.
- 2Being “accepted” of the Lord looks like honesty, a broken heart, a contrite spirit, and a willing readiness to keep covenants by sacrifice, not flawless performance all at once.
- 3As we honor covenants, blessings follow in recognizable ways: the fruits of obedience become evident, the Spirit communicates God’s pleasure, and we face life with hope because of God’s promise to us.
Reflection Questions
- Where, specifically, do I hear the Savior’s voice most clearly right now (scripture, temple covenants, prophetic counsel, promptings), and what is one instruction I’m hesitating to follow?
- What “lesser thing” (habit, ambition, comfort, or convenience) is distancing my heart from the Lord, and what small sacrifice would help me lay it aside this week?
- When have I recently seen one of Elder Walker’s covenant blessings, clearer fruits of obedience, the Spirit’s reassurance, or steadier hope, and what helped invite it?
Application Prompt
Choose one covenant-related act of obedience you’ve been postponing, do it this week as a deliberate sacrifice to the Lord, and write down what changes you notice in guidance, peace, or hope.
