Saturday Morning Session
Prayers for Peace
President Henry B. Eyring
First Counselor in the First Presidency
As we pray continually, no matter the circumstances of life, the Lord will offer us His peace and abiding support.
Overview
President Henry B. Eyring returns to the Savior’s promise at the Last Supper, “Peace I leave with you”, and teaches that in a troubled world the Lord’s peace comes through sincere, continual prayer. He explains that powerful prayer is not about many words but about pouring out our souls, including silent prayers of the heart, and he shows from Alma’s people and the sons of Mosiah that consistent prayer brings strength, revelation, and the ability to bear burdens. He closes by witnessing that the Lord answered his own prayer for peace in grief and will honor humble prayers for peace in our hearts.
Three Key Takeaways
- 1The Savior’s peace is different from what the world offers, and He invites us to receive it through prayer so our hearts need not be troubled or afraid.
- 2Heavenly Father hears not only spoken prayers but also the unspoken prayers of our hearts; “pouring out” the soul matters more than flowery language or many words.
- 3Continual prayer, during calm seasons as well as crises, brings abiding support, spiritual strength, and, in the Lord’s timing, revelation and peace to carry burdens.
Reflection Questions
- When have you felt the contrast between “peace… as the world giveth” and the Lord’s peace, and what kind of prayer led to that change in your heart?
- What tends to make your prayers either rushed or repetitive, and what would it look like this week to “pour out [your] soul” more honestly in private prayer?
- What burden are you carrying where you need the Lord to “ease” or lighten it, and how could you keep a continual prayer in your heart about it instead of waiting for a breaking point?
Application Prompt
Each day this week, set aside a private moment to pray simply for the Savior’s peace and then keep a quiet, ongoing prayer in your heart about one specific worry or burden throughout the day.
