Sunday Afternoon Session
God Is at Your Side
Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus
Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency
I invite you to look at your life and what you want to achieve with enthusiasm and the certainty that your Father in Heaven will guide you.
Overview
Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus speaks directly to young women. She tells them they matter in these latter days and invites them to plan their lives with confidence that Heavenly Father will guide them. As a young woman she studied the thirteenth article of faith, and afterward she wrote a list of the virtuous and good things she wanted in her life. She illustrates God's guidance with a GPS that sent her the wrong way until her husband, who knew her exact location, talked her to the dentist's office. She points to Mark 10:21, where Jesus looked at the rich young man and loved him before telling him what to improve. She then offers seven practical helps and closes with a priesthood blessing she received during a hard time in a new country: "The Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are at your side."
Three Key Takeaways
- 1The thirteenth article of faith can shape your goals. After a lesson on it, Sister Spannaus wrote down good things she wanted to learn, contribute, create, and become, and she invites young women to make their own list of aspirations.
- 2The Lord knows your exact location. A phone's GPS misread where she was, but her husband could guide her once he knew precisely where she was driving. In the same way, God knows each young woman's dreams, gifts, loneliness, questions, and weaknesses, and knowing all of it does not make Him love her less.
- 3Jesus showed love before He gave correction. Mark 10:21 says that before Jesus told the rich young man what he lacked, He "beholding him loved him." Heavenly Father and the Savior love each of us that way, and They are patient as we work on our aspirations.
Reflection Questions
- If you wrote your own list of virtuous, lovely, and praiseworthy things you want in your life, what would be the first three items, and how would each one bring you closer to God?
- Where do you feel like the GPS has the wrong location for you right now, and what would it look like to tell Heavenly Father exactly where you are in prayer?
- Jesus looked at the young man with love before He told him what to change. How might it change your efforts to improve if you started by believing the Lord loves you as you are right now?
Application Prompt
This Sunday, read the thirteenth article of faith and write a list of good things you want to achieve in your life, then choose one of Sister Spannaus's seven helps to practice every day for the next few weeks.
