Sunday Afternoon Session

“Prove Me Now Herewith”

Elder Moisés Villanueva

Of the Seventy

Sometimes we expect the Lord’s blessings to come the way we would wish, rather than in His own way and timing.

Overview

Elder Moisés Villanueva tells how his mother, raising eight children alone after separating from his father, chose to pay a full tithe after their family was baptized when he was 10. He teaches that the Lord keeps His promise in Malachi 3:10 to open the windows of heaven. Often, though, the blessings come in His way and timing instead of the way we expect. Drawing on Elder David A. Bednar's teaching that tithing brings "significant but subtle blessings," he shares a list of the blessings he has received. He also tells of a sister whose propane tank lasted longer than expected. Then he connects his mother's faith to the widow of Zarephath, who fed Elijah first and saw her meal and oil last until the rain came (1 Kings 17).

Three Key Takeaways

  • 1Blessings come through obedience to the law they are based on (Doctrine and Covenants 130:20–21), and the Lord keeps what He promises (Doctrine and Covenants 58:31). So tithing is a promise you can test, as Malachi 3:10 invites with "prove me now herewith."
  • 2When a sister's testimony of tithing weakened because she never got a promotion or raise, Elder Villanueva did not promise her those things. He invited her to write down the subtle blessings she already had, because the Lord's blessings often come in forms we don't expect and can easily miss.
  • 3The blessings of tithing are both temporal and spiritual. His list includes steady work, good health, protected possessions, and time and resources for an education. It also includes the gift of gratitude and the ability to recognize the Holy Ghost when making decisions.

Reflection Questions

  • What blessing have you been waiting for in return for your obedience, and could the Lord be answering in a way you have overlooked?
  • What things in your life, such as your health, your work, your possessions, or your time, have held up better than you might have expected?
  • Like the widow who fed Elijah first, where is the Lord asking you to put Him first before you can see how things will work out?

Application Prompt

This week, ask the Holy Ghost to help you see what the Lord has given you, then write a list of the significant but subtle blessings, both temporal and spiritual, that have come as you have kept the law of tithing.
