Open Week 4 in App →Primary Lesson Plan: Adam and Eve Leave Eden—Jesus Brings Us Joy!
(For ages 8-10, based on Genesis 3–4; Moses 4–5)
Opening Connection
Gather the children in a circle and hold up a shiny apple or piece of fruit. Ask, "What would you do if someone said, 'Eat this, and you'll know good from evil, but you might have to leave your favorite playground?'" Share a quick story: Adam and Eve lived in a beautiful garden but chose to eat the fruit, leaving Eden for a world with hard things like work and pain (see Genesis 3:16–19; Moses 4:22–31). But this choice was part of Heavenly Father's plan so we could grow, choose right, and find joy through Jesus Christ (Moses 5:11). Today, we'll discover how!
Scripture Discovery
Show printed or drawn pictures from "Adam and Eve" in Old Testament Stories (pages 13–16). Mix them up and do a treasure hunt: Hide 5-6 pictures around the room. Children hunt in pairs, then sequence them on the floor while reading key verses partner-style. First, read Moses 4:22–31 and Genesis 3:1–7 together—point to pictures of the serpent, fruit, and leaving Eden. Ask: "What hard things happened?" Next, partner-read Moses 5:4–15. Find the angel and sacrifices. Highlight Moses 5:9–12: "And in that day Adam blessed God, and Eve, also, with me, did rejoice greatly. ... And Adam and Eve, his wife, called upon the name of the Lord, and they heard the voice of the Lord." Compare: How did Adam and Eve feel after? (They were glad!) This shows the Fall opened the door for Jesus' redemption.
Core Gospel Principles
- The Fall was important to God’s plan: Adam and Eve left beautiful Eden, facing opposition to grow, choose, repent, and return to God (Moses 5:10–11; see 2 Nephi 2:19–25).
- Jesus Christ offers hope and redemption: The angel taught them about Jesus' Atonement, which overcomes Fall effects like death and sin (Moses 5:8–11, 14–15).
- We can choose the right and pray: Heavenly Father and Jesus protect our agency to choose good amid Satan's deceptions (Moses 4:1–4; 5:4, 8).
Interactive Learning Activities
Activity 1: Color Choice Object Lesson (Object Lessons)
Materials: Crayons (one color per child first, then baskets of many colors); paper.
Steps: 1. Give each child one crayon and plain paper. Say, "Color a happy picture!" (1 min—they'll see limits). 2. Read Moses 4:1–4 aloud: "Satan ... sought ... to destroy the agency of man." Give color baskets. "Heavenly Father gives choices so we can pick right, like good/bad!" Let them recolor freely (3-4 min).
Connection: Shows agency—without choices, no growth (Moses 4:1–4).
Questions: "Why better with choices? How does Jesus help good choices?"
Activity 2: Angel Message Role-Play (Role-Play & Acting)
Materials: Simple props (fruit picture, toy angel wings from paper, blanket "garden").
Steps: 1. Divide into small groups of 3-4. Assign roles: Adam/Eve, serpent/angel, narrator. 2. Act out Moses 5:4–15: Eat "fruit," leave "garden," pray, angel teaches gospel/Jesus (5 min per group, rotate watching). 3. Groups share one glad feeling like Adam/Eve.
Connection: Brings alive how Jesus redeems after Fall (Moses 5:8–11, 14–15).
Questions: "Why were they glad? How does Jesus help us today?"
Activity 3: Because of Jesus Cards (Hands-On Crafts)
Materials: Paper hearts, crayons/markers, glue.
Steps: 1. Fold paper into heart cards. 2. One side: Draw/write "Because of the Fall, I..." (e.g., feel sad, work hard—from Moses 4:25; Genesis 3). Other side: "Because of Jesus Christ, I..." (e.g., can repent, live again—Moses 5:8–11; 6:59). 3. Share 1-2 with partner (4 min).
Connection: Matches sentence completions from scriptures, showing redemption (Moses 5:8–11, 14–15).
Questions: "What did you write? How does this make you feel grateful?"
Life Application Bridge
These principles help at school (choose friends over bad choices like Satan's lies, Moses 4:4–12), home (help like Adam's work, pray when missing Heavenly Father, Moses 5:4, 8), and with friends (share Jesus' hope when someone feels sad from mistakes). Sing "Choose the Right Way" (Children’s Songbook, 160–61) to march good choices!
Testimony Time
Pass a soft ball: "Share one thing Jesus does for you, like Adam and Eve learned." Listen warmly— "I know Jesus redeems us, bringing joy after hard choices (Moses 5:11)."
Take-Home Challenge
Draw one good choice picture from today (like praying or choosing right). Show family tonight, read Moses 5:4 together, and say why you're glad for Jesus!
Teacher Tips
- Time activities tightly (10 min each) with a timer song. 2. For shy children, pair with buddies; enlarge pictures for visibility.
