Come, Follow Me Youth Lesson: Genesis 3–4; Moses 4–5
“Why Was the Fall Important to God’s Plan?”
(45–60 minutes, for ages 11–17)

Opening Connection
Imagine you're in the most perfect place ever—no worries, no hard choices, everything handed to you. Sounds great, right? But what if staying there meant you could never grow, never learn from mistakes, never become who you're meant to be? That's like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Today, we'll explore why leaving Eden wasn't a tragedy but the start of something glorious—the chance to choose, grow, and return to God (Moses 5:11). What choices are you facing right now that feel tough but might help you grow?

Scripture Discovery
Divide into pairs or small groups for interactive study. Give each group colored pencils or highlighters.

  1. Partner Read: Moses 5:9–12. Read aloud together. Mark phrases showing Adam and Eve's feelings after the Fall. One asks: "How did Adam and Eve feel about the Fall?" Share: "Adam and Eve... were glad" after learning of redemption (Moses 5:10–11). Discuss: How does this change how you see opposition in your life?

  2. Compare and Contrast: Genesis 3:1–7 and Moses 4:22–31. List results of the Fall (pain, separation from God). Then turn to Moses 5:4–15. Treasure hunt: Find God's plan for redemption (angel's message, gospel of Jesus Christ). Contrast: What made Adam and Eve "glad" (Moses 5:10)?

  3. Marking Activity: Moses 4:1–4. Underline what Heavenly Father and Jesus did to protect agency. Connect to 2 Nephi 2:19–25: "It must needs be, that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life" (2 Nephi 2:15). Pairs share one insight on why opposition is needed to choose right.

Core Gospel Principles
These build step by step, from the Fall to personal growth.

  1. The Fall was necessary for God's plan. Adam and Eve's choice brought opposition but opened progression: "leaving the Garden of Eden was the necessary first step toward returning to God" (Come, Follow Me). See Moses 5:11: "the joy of our redemption."

  2. Agency requires opposition. Heavenly Father and Jesus protected our right to choose (Moses 4:1–4). Lehi taught: "men are free... to choose liberty and eternal life... or captivity and death" (2 Nephi 2:27). Elder Dale G. Renlund: "Our Heavenly Father’s goal... is to have His children choose to do what is right" (Ensign, Nov. 2018).

  3. Jesus Christ offers hope and redemption. From the Fall's effects, God provided the Savior: "Adam and Eve’s story is one of hope and redemption through Jesus Christ" (Come, Follow Me). "Because of Him" (video, Gospel Library).

  4. Satan tempts, but God helps us choose right. Satan seeks "to deceive and to blind" (Moses 4:4–12; 5:13–33). Heavenly Father clothes and guides us (Moses 4:13–16, 27).

Engaging Activities (3 Sequential)
Build understanding through action—do in rotation or whole class.

  1. Small Group Workshops (10 min). Groups research one: Satan's tactics today (Moses 4:4–12; 5:13–33) or Abel vs. Cain's sacrifices (Moses 5:4–9, 16–26). "Why did the Lord accept Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s?" Present: How to offer sacrifices with a "willing and obedient heart."

  2. Case Study Discussions (10 min). Scenario: A friend pressures you to cheat on a test—opposition like the Fall. Groups solve: Use agency (2 Nephi 2:27), seek Christ's redemption. Role-play responses, emphasizing equal partnerships (Family Proclamation).

  3. Testimony Circles (5 min). Sit in circle. Each shares one way Christ redeems them from a "fallen" moment (e.g., mistake at school). Reference "Because of Him" video insights.

Life Application Bridge
These truths hit home in your world. At school, opposition like peer pressure tests agency—choose like Adam and Eve learned to (Moses 5:9–12). In family, husbands and wives as "equal partners" (Family Proclamation; Elder Ulisses Soares video) models respect. Facing failure? Christ's Atonement brings "joy of our redemption" (Moses 5:11)—prep for missions, temple, adulthood by choosing right now (For the Strength of Youth, "Make inspired choices").

Unified Closing
From Eden's loss to eternal glory, it's all about choosing Christ amid opposition. Your challenge: This week, when facing a tough choice, pause and pray like Adam (Moses 5:4, 8). Write one opposition you overcame and how Christ helped. Share next week? I know Jesus redeems us—I've felt His peace turn my regrets to growth. Let's choose celestial paths together.
