Open Week 6 in App →Happy Opening (2 minutes): “One Big Heart!”
Hold up a paper heart that has been cut into 6–10 puzzle pieces (already cut). Smile and say: “Uh-oh! My heart got broken into pieces. Can we put it back together?”
Let children each hold a piece for a moment. Ask: “Can we make one heart again?”
Main idea tease: “Today we’ll learn about a people called Zion who tried to be together—like one big heart!”
Simple Scripture Story (5 minutes): Enoch and Zion
Props: the heart pieces + a simple picture of Enoch (or just point to the heart).
Tell the story simply: “In the scriptures, a prophet named Enoch helped people come closer to God. The Lord called His people Zion. Zion means people who try to be good and united.”
Say: “The scripture says they were ‘of one heart and one mind’ (Moses 7:18). That means they tried to love and think like God wants.”
Invite participation:
- “Show me your ‘one heart’ hands—put your hands on your heart.”
- “Show me your ‘one mind’ hands—touch your head.”
Ask: “What do you think it feels like when everyone is kind and helps each other?”
Big Idea (repeat often)
“We can help build Zion when we love each other and try to be one heart and one mind (Moses 7:18).”
Wiggle and Learn Activities (12–15 minutes total)
1) Object Lesson: “Heart Puzzle Teamwork”
What to do:
- Give each child a heart piece.
- Help them work together to rebuild the heart on the floor or a table.
Materials: paper heart cut into pieces, tape (optional).
What to say: “Look! When we work together, we can make one heart. Zion people tried to be ‘of one heart and one mind’ (Moses 7:18).”
Connects forward: “Now let’s use our bodies to practice being ‘one’!”
2) Game (Movement): “One Heart, One Mind—Freeze!”
What to do:
- Call out actions: “Kind hands!” (wave), “Helping feet!” (march), “Sharing arms!” (pretend to give).
- When you say “ONE HEART!” everyone freezes with hands on heart. When you say “ONE MIND!” everyone freezes touching head.
Materials: none.
What to say: “When we choose kindness, we help build Zion—being one heart and one mind (Moses 7:18).”
Connects forward: “Let’s make something we can take home to remember!”
3) Hands-On Craft: “My Zion Heart”
What to do:
- Give each child a paper heart.
- They draw a simple picture of one kind thing: helping, sharing, hugging, praying. (If they’re tiny, they can color a heart and you label it.)
Materials: paper hearts, crayons.
What to say: “Zion starts in our hearts. When I do kind things, I help build Zion.”
Connects forward: “Now let’s look at a picture to help us remember Zion!”
4) Interactive Discussion (very short): “Find the Word ‘Zion’”
What to do:
- You read aloud Moses 7:18–21 (or selected lines) and have children listen for the word “Zion.”
- Each time they hear “Zion,” they quietly clap once.
Materials: scriptures (teacher).
What to say: “You listened so carefully! Zion is about being God’s people and loving each other.”
Connects forward: “Let’s see a picture of Zion!”
Picture Time (2–3 minutes): Gospel Art Book
Show: “City of Zion Translated,” by Del Parson (from the bundle).
Ask (simple):
- “What do you see the people doing?”
- “Do they look peaceful and together?”
- “How can our class be like that—one heart and one mind (Moses 7:18)?”
Re-say Big Idea: “We build Zion when we love each other and try to be one.”
Song and Actions (3 minutes): “Follow the Prophet” (verse about Enoch)
Song: “Follow the Prophet” (Children’s Songbook, 110–11), second verse (as suggested in the bundle).
Actions:
- March in place on the beat (“follow”).
- Point upward on “prophet.”
- Hands on heart when you sing about doing what’s right (keep it simple).
Tie-in line: “Enoch helped people choose goodness and be united—like Zion.”
Jesus Loves Me Moment (2 minutes)
Gather close. Hold up the completed class heart (or the children’s hearts).
Say softly: “Enoch’s people tried to be Zion—one heart and one mind (Moses 7:18). Jesus Christ is called ‘the King of Zion’ (Moses 7:53). When we love each other, we are helping build Zion.”
Invite sharing: “Finish this sentence: ‘I can be like Jesus when I ______.’” (Let 2–3 children answer.)
Testimony (simple and natural): “I know Heavenly Father loves you, and He is happy when you choose kindness and help each other.”
Take-Home Hug (this week)
“Give someone in your family a hug and do one kind thing without being asked. Tell them: ‘We can be one heart!’”
Teacher Survival Tips
- Keep transitions fast: hold up the heart piece and say, “Hands on hearts—walk to the table!”
- Use “repeat after me” often: “One heart, one mind!” to refocus wiggly kids.
- If attention drops, skip Activity 4 and go straight to the picture + song—movement resets the room quickly.
