Come Follow Me 2026 · Week 44
Family Activities
October 26–November 1 · Jeremiah 31–33; 36–38; Lamentations 1; 3
This week's one thing
The Lord loves us with an everlasting love, even in our darkest places.
Opener: The Flashlight in the Closet
Turn off every light in the room, close the blinds, and let everyone sit in the dark for ten silent seconds. Ask, 'What is hard about being in the dark?' Then click on the flashlight and point it at the ceiling so the whole room glows. Read Lamentations 3:22–23 by flashlight and ask, 'Did the darkness go away, or did the light just show up inside it?'
Jeremiah lived through some of the darkest days in Israel's history, and the Lord's love kept shining in the middle of them.
Scripture Story
Jeremiah keeps telling the people of Jerusalem what the Lord wants them to hear. The king's leaders are angry. 'Get rid of him!' they say. They grab Jeremiah and lower him with ropes into a deep, dark pit. There is no water at the bottom, only thick, squishy mud. Jeremiah sinks into it. It is cold and it is dark. Up in the palace, a kind man named Ebed-melech hears what happened. He runs to the king. 'These men did a wicked thing! Jeremiah will die down there!' The king says, 'Take thirty men and pull him out.' Ebed-melech finds a pile of old rags and worn-out clothes. He lowers them down on the ropes. 'Put these under your arms,' he calls, 'so the ropes won't hurt you.' Jeremiah does. The men pull and pull, and up comes Jeremiah, out of the mud and into the light. What do you think Jeremiah was feeling when he saw the ropes coming down?
Discussion Questions
Little Kids (ages 4–7)
- What would you want someone to bring you if you were stuck in a dark, muddy hole?
- Who helps you feel better when you are scared at night?
Big Kids (ages 8–11)
- Ebed-melech could have stayed quiet and kept himself safe. Why do you think he went to the king?
- King Jehoiakim cut up Jeremiah's scroll and burned it, and the Lord had Jeremiah write it all again (Jeremiah 36:23, 28). What does that tell you about how God feels about His words?
Teens
- Jeremiah bought a field in a land that was about to be conquered because the Lord promised the people would come back (Jeremiah 32:6–15). What would it look like for you to 'buy a field' right now, making a choice that only makes sense if God keeps His promises?
This Week's Challenge
Put a flashlight on the kitchen table all week. Whenever someone notices a way Heavenly Father showed love to our family that day, they click it on and tell everyone at dinner. On Sunday, count how many times the light came on.
Song Suggestions
Rescue Rope for Jeremiah
Ages 3-10~10 min- 1
Step 1: Draw a small Jeremiah on paper, cut him out, and put him at the bottom of the paper cup (the pit).
- 2
Step 2: Tape the cloth scrap to one end of the string so it makes a soft sling.
- 3
Step 3: Lower the sling into the cup, tuck Jeremiah into it, and pull him up into the light.
Heavenly Father often sends His love through people like Ebed-melech, and we can be the ones who lower the rope.
