God knew you and chose you before you were born.

Opener: Rank the Hard Jobs

Write these four jobs on paper: babysit toddlers, give a talk in front of 500 people, tell a friend they're making a mistake, clean the whole kitchen alone. Have everyone rank them from hardest to easiest and explain their top pick. Then ask: which one is closest to being a prophet?

Jeremiah was handed the hardest job of all, and he felt too young and too scared for it, until God reminded him who was really in charge.

Scripture Story

God speaks to a young man named Jeremiah. "Before I made you in your mother's body, I already knew you," God says. "I chose you to be my prophet for the whole nation." Jeremiah shakes his head. "But I can't do that! I'm too young. I don't even know how to speak." God answers, "Don't say you're too young. You will go where I send you, and you will say what I tell you to say. Don't be afraid, because I am with you." Then God reaches out and touches Jeremiah's mouth. "I have put my words right here, in your mouth." Jeremiah still feels small, but now he knows he is not alone. The God who made him is standing beside him. What do you think Jeremiah was feeling when God said, "I knew you before you were born"?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • Who knew you before you were even born?
  • When you feel scared, who can be with you to help?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Jeremiah said he was too young to do the job. When have you felt too small or too young for something hard?
  • God didn't take away the hard job, He just promised to help. Why do you think He does it that way?

Teens

  • If God knew you and had plans for you before you were born, does that mean your choices are already decided for you? How do both things fit together?

This Week's Challenge

This week, when someone in the family says "I can't do it," answer back with Jeremiah's promise: "You're not alone." See how many times you can catch each other being brave, and share the count on Sunday.

The Clean Cloth

Ages 3-10~10 min
scrap of cloth or paper towelcup of waterbar of soapdirt or a pencil to smudgesmall bowl

    Step 1: Smudge the cloth with dirt or pencil marks until it looks messy.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Talk about how the cloth got dirty little by little, the way we make mistakes.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Wash the cloth in the water with soap and watch it come clean, then lay it out to dry.

In Jeremiah 18 God is the potter who can reshape His people, and through Jesus Christ our worst stains can be washed clean and made new.
