Family Activities

May 11–17 - Deuteronomy 6–8; 15; 18; 29–30; 34

This week's one thing

When we remember the Lord in everyday life, our hearts stay turned toward Him.

Opener: The Flashlight Forgetting Test

flashlight (or phone flashlight)a blanket or towel

Turn off the lights and cover the flashlight with the blanket so only a little light leaks out. Ask, "Can you still find your shoes with this?" then uncover it and shine it around the room. Say, "For a minute, we could still see, but it gets harder fast when the light is covered."

Remembering the Lord is like keeping the light uncovered so we can see where to go.

Scripture Story

Moses stands with the people and speaks like a parent packing kids for a long trip. He says, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" (Deuteronomy 6:4). Then he gives them something to do, not just something to know: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might" (Deuteronomy 6:5). He points to their ordinary days. "Talk about these words when you sit in your house, when you walk, when you lie down, and when you rise up" (Deuteronomy 6:7). He warns them about a danger that shows up when life finally gets easier: "Beware lest thou forget the Lord" (Deuteronomy 6:12). It is like he is saying, "When you are full and comfortable, keep the light on." What do you think Moses was feeling when he warned them about forgetting?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • What is one place in our house where you would like to remember Jesus more?
  • What helps you remember to pray, like morning, bedtime, or mealtime?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Deuteronomy 6:7 says to talk about God’s words during normal parts of the day. When is a time it would feel natural for you?
  • Moses warns about forgetting the Lord when things go well (Deuteronomy 6:12). What makes people forget when life gets easier?

Teens

  • Deuteronomy 8 connects remembering God with how we handle success and comfort (Deuteronomy 8:11-18). What helps you stay humble without pretending you have no strengths?

This Week's Challenge

Pick one daily "light switch" moment this week, like brushing teeth or getting in the car, and say one sentence together that helps you remember the Lord. Keep it the same all week so it turns into a habit.

Doorpost Reminder Cards

Ages 3-10~10 min
papertapemarkers or crayonsscissors (optional)
  1. 1

Step 1: Cut or fold paper into small cards that can fit by a door, a mirror, or a bedside table.

  2. 2

Step 2: On each card, draw a simple picture that helps you remember the Lord, like a heart, scriptures, or a family praying.

  3. 3

Step 3: Tape one card where you will see it every day, like near a light switch or the front door.

Moses told Israel to put the Lord’s words where they would see them often (Deuteronomy 6:6-9), and our reminder cards do the same.
