Full Lesson Flow
Teaching Outline
Work through the lesson in order, with each section building on the last.
Happy Opening (2 minutes): “Heart Hands!”
Main idea smile-starter: Hold up a paper heart. Ask: “Can you make a heart with your hands?” (Help them try.) Say: “Today we’re learning that we can love Heavenly Father with all our heart.”
(If you like, sing just the chorus of a familiar love song you already know in Primary, then say, “We can show love to Heavenly Father too!”)
Simple Scripture Story (6–8 minutes): Moses Teaches the People to Remember and Love God
Props: a paper heart, a small paper “door,” and a little paper “hand” (or your own hand)
Tell it simply: Moses was a prophet. He taught God’s people what to do so they would remember Heavenly Father and love Him.
Read Deuteronomy 6:5–6 and let children point to the heart each time they hear “heart”:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5) “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:” (Deuteronomy 6:6)
Then explain: Moses said, “Don’t forget the Lord.” Read Deuteronomy 6:12:
“Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” (Deuteronomy 6:12)
Participation questions (quick):
- “Where should God’s words be?” (Point to heart.)
- “Should we forget the Lord?” (No!)
- “How can we remember Him every day?”
Big Idea (repeat often)
I can love Heavenly Father with all my heart, and I can remember Him every day.
Wiggle and Learn Activities (12–15 minutes total)
1) Object Lesson: “Heart In / Heart Out” (3–4 minutes)
Materials: paper heart, crayons, a few small paper “bad choice” scribbles (optional)
What to do:
- Put the heart on the floor. Say: “This is my heart.”
- Invite children to name loving things we can do (pray, be kind, listen). As they say one, you draw a tiny picture inside the heart.
- Hold up a scribble and say: “Do we want yucky choices in our heart?” Let them say “No,” and place it outside the heart.
What to say (tie to Big Idea): “God said His words can be in our heart (Deuteronomy 6:6). We can choose to remember Him.”
Connection forward: “Now let’s play a remembering game!”
2) Game: “Don’t Forget! Picture Hunt” (4 minutes)
Materials: 6–8 small pictures you already have (Jesus, scriptures, praying, family, helping hands). Hide them around the room.
What to do:
- Say: “Moses said, ‘Beware lest thou forget the Lord’ (Deuteronomy 6:12). Let’s find reminders!”
- Children tiptoe to find one picture each and bring it back.
- For each picture: ask, “How does this help us remember Heavenly Father?”
What to say: “These are our ‘remember’ pictures. They help our hearts love Heavenly Father.”
Connection forward: “Let’s make a tiny reminder to take home!”
3) Hands-On Craft: “My Heart Reminder” (4 minutes)
Materials: small paper hearts, crayons, stickers (optional)
What to do:
- Give each child a paper heart.
- Help them draw one simple thing that helps them remember God (a praying child, scriptures, a family).
- Write (or say) the simple phrase: “In my heart” (from Deuteronomy 6:6).
What to say: “God’s words can be in our hearts (Deuteronomy 6:6). This heart can help you remember.”
Connection forward: “Now let’s move our bodies while we sing!”
4) Music & Movement: “Heart, Soul, Might Actions” (3 minutes)
Materials: none
What to do:
- Say the rhythm together: “Heart! Soul! Might!”
- Add actions:
- Heart: hands over heart
- Soul: hands on cheeks (like ‘me!’)
- Might: show strong arms
- Repeat while you softly chant Deuteronomy 6:5 in short phrases.
What to say: “We can love Heavenly Father with all our heart, soul, and might (Deuteronomy 6:5).”
Picture Time (3 minutes): Gospel Art Book Picture
Use: “The Lord Shewed Him All the Land” (Walter Rane) (listed in the bundle)
Show the picture and ask:
- “Who is this?” (Moses)
- “What do you think Moses wants the people to do?” (Remember God, love God)
- “What can you do this week to remember Heavenly Father?”
Repeat Big Idea: “I can love Heavenly Father with all my heart, and remember Him every day.”
Song and Actions (2–3 minutes): “I Feel My Savior’s Love” (Children’s Songbook)
Actions (simple):
- “Love” = hug yourself
- “Heart” = hands on heart
- “Know” = tap head gently
Sing just one verse/chorus as attention allows, and point back to loving God with our heart (Deuteronomy 6:5–6).
Jesus Loves Me Moment (2 minutes)
Hold up the class paper heart (or your heart prop). Say: “God taught His people to love Him and remember Him. He said, ‘These words… shall be in thine heart’ (Deuteronomy 6:6).”
Invite quick sharing (one sentence each):
- “I can be like Jesus when I ______.” or
- “I can remember Heavenly Father when I ______.”
Take-Home Hug (10 seconds)
This week: Put your paper heart somewhere you will see it (by your bed or where you get ready) and say a short prayer to remember Heavenly Father.
Teacher Survival Tips
- Keep turns lightning-fast: If sharing takes too long, say, “One word answers!”
- Use “hands on heart” as a quiet signal: Practice once, when you do it, they copy and get calm.
- If energy spikes: Do the “Heart! Soul! Might!” actions again for 20 seconds, then sit for Picture Time.
