If a youth is teaching

Hand them this

Have this Sunday's lesson open on your phone and start by drawing lines on the board without saying anything, or by asking where people go when they need to know something is true. Skip the Joseph Smith section and do just one activity, either the charades or the relay drawing. To close, have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 93:13 and invite everyone to write down one new truth they learn this week.

Before Sunday

Send this to your class

Sunday: Where does truth come from?

Before Sunday, open this Sunday's lesson in the November For the Strength of Youth magazine and read the first paragraph. Then read one of the verses it lists under "Where does truth come from?", maybe Moses 1:39 or John 3:16–17. Ponder this: what is one truth from God that changes how you live your everyday life?

Pick one opening

Opening question

Have everyone open this Sunday's lesson. Ask someone to read the first paragraph out loud. Then ask: "Online, at school, and from friends we hear lots of things that sound true. When you really need to know something is true, where do you go, and why do you trust that source?" Let a few people answer. Then point to the lesson's first heading: truth comes from God, and you can always trust Him. Tell the class that today you'll look at some of the truths He has given us.

Truth Charades

Materials: Gospel Library on phones

  1. 1.This activity uses the first learning activity in this Sunday's lesson, "Where does truth come from?" Split into teams (with only three youth, each person can be a team). Give each team one of the six verses: Matthew 3:17, John 3:16–17, Romans 8:16–17, Mosiah 4:9, Doctrine and Covenants 1:37–38, or Moses 1:39.
  2. 2.Give teams 2 minutes to read their verse and agree in one sentence on the truth God reveals in it.
  3. 3.Each team acts out its truth silently, charades style. Everyone else has the six verses open and races to name which verse it is and what truth it teaches.
  4. 4.After each correct guess, have the acting team read its verse out loud and ask them one thing: "How is your life different because you know this?"

Bring it back: All six of these truths came from God. How does knowing where a truth comes from change how much you rely on it when life gets hard?

Teach this first

Truth comes from God

Have someone read the first paragraph of this Sunday's lesson out loud. It teaches that God is the source of eternal truth and that He gives truth through the scriptures and latter-day prophets. Then have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 1:37–38, where the Lord says that His word is fulfilled whether He speaks it Himself or through His servants. Because of that, the truths in the six verses the lesson lists are ones we can build our lives on, and the Spirit helps us recognize them.

Ask the class

  • 1.Which of the truths we found today matters most to you right now, and why?
  • 2.How does relying on the Spirit help you tell what is true and what is important when you hear so many voices?

If time remains

God gives truth line upon line

If there's time, stay on "Why do you have to keep learning?" in this Sunday's lesson. Have someone read 2 Nephi 28:30 out loud. It teaches that the Lord gives truth line upon line, and that those who listen receive more. Come back to the drawing on the board and finish it together.

Ask the class

  • 1.Why do you think the Lord teaches us a little at a time instead of all at once?

Last 3–5 minutes

Close

Open this Sunday's lesson to "Why do you have to keep learning?" and have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 93:13 out loud. This week, write down one new "line" of truth you learn from the scriptures or a prophet's words, and notice how it adds to what you already know about the Savior.

In 2 Nephi 28:30, the Lord promises that those who listen to His precepts and counsel will receive more.

Your witness: Share briefly how one truth from God, maybe one of the six verses from today, became clearer to you over time, and how that has helped you trust Jesus Christ.
