If a youth is teaching

Hand them this

Keep this Sunday's lesson open on your phone the whole time, and start by having someone read the "I am a beloved daughter" paragraph. Teach Esther from Esther 4:13–16 and play only one activity. Skip the other passages if you're running short on time. To close, have someone read the "Live as a disciple of Christ" questions, then give the invitation to write down what the Lord is preparing each of them to do.

Sunday: Esther, prepared for such a time as this

On Sunday we're studying Queen Esther. Open this Sunday's lesson in the November For the Strength of Youth magazine and read Esther 4:13–16 before class. Mordecai tells Esther she may have come to the kingdom "for such a time as this." Ponder this question: What might the Lord be preparing you to do?

Pick one opening

Opening question

Have everyone open this Sunday's lesson in Gospel Library. Ask someone to read the first paragraph under "Study together" out loud, the one that begins "I am a beloved daughter of heavenly parents." Then ask: "Which words in that paragraph describe who you are now, and which describe who you are becoming?" Take two or three answers. Then tell the class: "Today we meet a young woman who had to decide whether she would live up to who she was. Her name is Esther."

Two Lists Board Race

Materials: Chalkboard or whiteboard, chalk or markers

  1. 1.This activity comes from the learning activity in this Sunday's lesson: making a list of "the things of this world" and a list of "the things of a better." Have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 25:10 out loud from the lesson.
  2. 2.Draw a line down the middle of the board. Label one side "Things of this world" and the other "Things of a better." Split the class into two teams (with 3 youth, play as one team against a 90-second timer).
  3. 3.Give each team one marker. Team members take turns running up to add one item to either column, then hand off the marker. Give them 2 minutes. No repeats allowed.
  4. 4.Then have each team pick one item from the first column and act out in 15 seconds what it would look like to "lay it aside" for something in the second column. The other team guesses.
  5. 5.Ask: "Which item on the board did Esther have to lay aside? What did she seek instead?" Have them look at Esther 4:16 for the answer.

Bring it back: What is one thing from the first list you feel the Lord is inviting you to lay aside so He can prepare you for something better?

Teach this first

Esther was prepared for such a time as this

The Lord prepared Esther over years: Mordecai raised and taught her (Esther 2:7), she found favor, and she became queen before the danger came. When Haman's decree threatened her people, she had to choose, because going to the king uninvited could cost her life. She fasted with her people and then acted (Esther 4:16), and her courage saved them. Open this Sunday's lesson and have someone read Esther 4:14–16 out loud, then Esther 7:3–4. Point out that the Lord's preparation came first, and that Esther's faith was in God, not in her own position.

Ask the class

  • 1.In these verses, what are some ways the Lord prepared Esther to save her people?
  • 2.What do you feel He is preparing you to do, and how is He preparing you right now?

If time remains

How His truth makes you free

Use this as the close if time allows. Open this Sunday's lesson to "Live as a disciple of Christ" and have someone read both questions out loud. Then have someone read John 8:32.

Ask the class

  • 1.As you studied this month, what have you learned about the Savior and how His truth makes you free, and how does that help you do His work?

Last 3–5 minutes

Close

This week, answer the question in this Sunday's lesson in writing: "What do you feel He is preparing you to do? How is He preparing you?" Then do one thing that helps that preparation along, as Esther did when she fasted before she acted.

Your witness: Share briefly when you saw, maybe only years later, that the Lord had been preparing you for a moment that mattered. Tell them what you know about Jesus Christ standing with His daughters when they act in faith.
