Sunday's class: What does Jesus Christ mean to you personally?
This Sunday we're discussing Elder Aaron T. Hall's April 2025 general conference talk 'I Glory in My Jesus.' He draws on Nephi's phrase 'my Jesus' to explore the difference between knowing about Christ and knowing Him personally. Ammon asks, 'Who can glory too much in the Lord?' Before Sunday, you might read 2 Nephi 4:19–35 or Alma 26:16. Ponder this question: Is there a name or role of Jesus Christ that has felt especially personal to you during a hard season of life?

Think of someone you love deeply, a parent, a spouse, a close friend. How does the way you talk about them differ from how you'd describe a stranger, or even a historical figure you admire? With that in mind, Elder Hall points out that Nephi didn't just say 'Jesus Christ', he said 'my Jesus.' What do you think that small word 'my' meant to Nephi? What might it mean for us?

At the end of his life's writing, after decades of trials, family conflict, crossing an ocean, and leading a people, Nephi pauses and says something surprisingly tender. He doesn't give a theological treatise. He says: 'I glory in my Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell.' Elder Hall noticed that in 1 and 2 Nephi alone there are over 60 names for Christ, yet at the end, Nephi chose the most personal one he knew.
Teach this first
Nephi's love for Jesus grew through lived experience, affliction, temptation, weakness, and deliverance. The names and roles of Christ are not abstract theology; they become personal when we connect them to moments in our own lives when He supported, led, preserved, or filled us with His love. Trusting Him in every circumstance, bitter and sweet, is how 'Jesus Christ' becomes 'my Jesus.'
Nephi writes: 'My God hath been my support. He hath led me through mine afflictions. He hath preserved me. He hath filled me with his love.' Then comes his declaration: 'Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever.', Elder Aaron T. Hall, quoting Nephi
