This class in one line

When we face burdens we cannot fix ourselves, the Savior sends His peace through the comforting power of the Holy Ghost, so living worthy of the Spirit's constant companionship should be one of our highest priorities.

Skip a long discussion of the President Oaks resurrection quote and Jacob's teaching on death and hell; mention them briefly and keep the class on how the Holy Ghost comforts us.

Sunday: Comfort from the Holy Ghost

This Sunday we will discuss Elder Matthew J. Eyring's October 2026 talk "Comfort from the Holy Ghost." He teaches that all of us will eventually face burdens we cannot carry alone, and that the Savior comforts us through the Holy Ghost. Read or listen to the talk in the Gospel Library if you can. Before Sunday, think about this: when has the Holy Ghost comforted you at a time when you could not fix the problem yourself?

Pick one opening

Opening question

We are taught from a young age to solve problems, to be independent, and to keep going. Those are good things. But think of a time when no amount of effort could fix what you were facing. What did you learn about where real comfort comes from? Take a moment to think before anyone answers.

Teach this first

The Savior comforts us through the Holy Ghost

Every one of us will face burdens we cannot carry or fix by ourselves: grief, illness, loneliness, a loved one who has strayed, or a habit we keep failing to overcome. Jesus Christ suffered for us and knows exactly how we feel, so He promised another Comforter, the Holy Ghost, to stay with us. As we turn to the Lord, His peace comes to us through the Spirit, sometimes as quiet peace and sometimes as answers, tools, or help from other people.

Elder Matthew J. Eyring taught that the Savior's peace is made manifest through the comforting power of the Holy Ghost, and that this comfort helps us "when we can't fix things on our own."
— Elder Matthew J. Eyring

Ask the class

  • 1.Elder Eyring says answers sometimes come as "tools, resources, and help from other people." How have you seen the Holy Ghost comfort someone through another person?
  • 2.Read John 14:16–18 together. What do the Savior's words "I will not leave you comfortless" mean to you when you are facing something you cannot fix?

If time remains

Living worthy of the Spirit's constant companionship

Elder Eyring reminds us of prophetic warnings that we will not survive spiritually without the constant influence of the Holy Ghost, because true sources of comfort are becoming scarce. He teaches that without divine comfort we can lose hope, and without hope we can lose faith, so keeping the Spirit with us should be one of our highest priorities.

Ask the class

  • 1.What helps you keep the Holy Ghost with you day to day, so His comfort is already close when hard times come?

Counsel together

Quorum / Relief Society business

  • •Who in our ward is carrying a burden they cannot fix right now, and how can we "mourn with those that mourn" in a way that helps the Spirit comfort them?
  • •Elder Eyring gave a priesthood blessing to a grieving father who had not yet received one. Are there members, especially those who are grieving, who might welcome a blessing or a visit?

Last 3–5 minutes

Close

This week, turn to the Lord in prayer about one burden you have been trying to carry alone, and pay attention to how the Holy Ghost brings comfort, whether through peace, an answer, or another person.

The Lord promised, "Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you," and Elder Eyring teaches that as we turn to Him, He will provide comfort and answers on His timetable.

Your witness: Think of a specific time the Holy Ghost comforted you when you could not fix things yourself, and share briefly what that taught you about the Savior.
