Open Week 7 in App →Week 7 (Feb 9–15): “Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6–11; Moses 8)
Primary (Ages 8–10) Lesson Plan — 600–800 words
Opening Connection (Attention + Simple Object Lesson)
Bring a small umbrella (or a raincoat) and ask: “If you knew a big storm was coming, what would you do to get ready?” Let children quickly share ideas (get inside, call family, prepare). Explain: Noah lived in a time when people were choosing wickedness, but Heavenly Father prepared a way for Noah’s family to be safe—by calling a prophet and giving instructions. Read this key truth from the Come, Follow Me introduction: Jesus said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be also at the coming of the Son of Man” (Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:41). Tell the class that today you’ll discover how prophets help families be spiritually safe.
Scripture Discovery (Interactive, 2 Passages)
-
Noah and the world around him (Teacher reads; kids listen for repeated words)
Write on the board: corrupt and violence. Read the bundle’s description: words like “corrupt” and “filled with violence,” describe Noah’s day (Genesis 6:12–13; Moses 8:28). Ask: “What do those words mean at school or online?” (unkindness, bullying, dishonesty). -
Noah: a prophet who taught truth (Partner “treasure hunt”)
In pairs, have children scan Moses 8:16–24 (as the bundle suggests) and look for “things Noah taught that the Lord’s prophets still teach today.” Invite pairs to report one teaching they notice (they can point to the verse where they found it). Emphasize: the Lord uses prophets because He loves His children. Share this statement exactly: “A perfect and loving Father in Heaven has chosen the pattern of revealing truth to His children through a prophet” (May 2023, Haynie, “A Living Prophet for the Latter Days,” 25).
Core Gospel Principles (Builds step-by-step)
-
Heavenly Father lovingly guides families through prophets.
Connect to Elder Haynie’s quote above (May 2023, Haynie, “A Living Prophet for the Latter Days,” 25). -
Following the prophet brings spiritual safety.
Use the bundle’s line: “There is spiritual safety in following the Lord’s prophet.” -
God gives reminders to help us remember His promises and our covenants.
Introduce the rainbow as a covenant reminder (Genesis 9:8–17). Read aloud: “God told Noah’s family that the rainbow would be ‘the token of the covenant which I make between me and you’” (Genesis 9:12).
Interactive Learning Activities (3 distinct types, detailed and connected)
Activity 1: “Build the Ark—Follow the Prophet!” (Games)
Materials: Paper “planks” (strips), tape, a small basket/box labeled “ARK.” On each plank write one prompt: “Prophets warn,” “Prophets invite,” “We listen,” “We obey,” “We are blessed,” “We help our family.”
Steps:
- Put planks face down. Children take turns drawing one.
- They read it aloud and say one simple example (e.g., “We listen” = pay attention in Primary, at home).
- Tape the plank onto the “ARK” box.
Connection: Reinforces the bundle’s theme: “There is spiritual safety in following the Lord’s prophet.”
Questions: “Which plank feels hardest sometimes? Which feels easiest? How does listening help your family?”
Activity 2: “Rainbow Covenant Reminder” (Hands-On Crafts)
Materials: Half-sheet paper, crayons/colored pencils. Optional: cotton balls.
Steps:
- Children draw a rainbow and write underneath: “Token of the covenant” (Genesis 9:12).
- Ask them to add one “reminder” they already have that helps them remember Jesus Christ (prompt from the bundle: sacrament, scriptures, a picture).
- Invite a few to share their picture and reminder.
Connection: “Tokens or symbols help me remember my covenants with the Lord” (Genesis 9:8–17).
Questions: “What did God want Noah’s family to remember when they saw a rainbow?” “What helps you remember your promises to Heavenly Father?”
Activity 3: “Tower or Temple Path?” (Physical Activities)
Materials: Two signs on opposite walls: “Tower of Babel” and “Follow Jesus Christ.” Slips of paper prepared in two sets (from the bundle’s ‘Learn actively’ idea): things that take us away from God and things that bring us nearer to God.
Steps:
- Give each child one slip. They read it silently and choose a wall to stand by.
- One at a time, children explain why their slip fits that side.
- Teacher clarifies: Babel shows pride and confusion (Genesis 11:1–9). God provides the true way back—Jesus Christ (John 3:16 is listed in the bundle).
Connection: “Following Jesus Christ is the only way to Heavenly Father.”
Questions: “Why was a tower the wrong plan?” “What are small ways we can follow Jesus this week?”
Life Application Bridge (School, Home, Friends)
Invite children to name one “storm” they face: peer pressure, mean words, cheating, anger. Then ask: “What would a prophet help us remember in that moment?” Return to the umbrella: it doesn’t stop the rain, but it helps you stay safe. Prophets and covenants don’t remove all hard days, but they help us choose Jesus Christ and protect our hearts.
Testimony Time (Gentle sharing prompt)
Prompt: “What did you feel today about Noah, the rainbow, or following Jesus Christ?” Allow 2–3 children to share. Then share your own simple witness that Heavenly Father lovingly reveals truth through prophets (May 2023, Haynie, “A Living Prophet for the Latter Days,” 25), and that God keeps His promises (Genesis 9:12).
Take-Home Challenge (One specific action)
This week, when you see a rainbow (or draw one at home), say: “Heavenly Father keeps His promises,” and do one action that shows you’re following Jesus Christ—listen the first time, be honest, or be kind to someone left out.
Teacher Tips (Practical)
- For active children, let them be “plank tapers” or “sign holders” to keep hands busy while listening.
- If reading is hard for some, pair strong readers with developing readers during Moses 8:16–24 and let them report together.
