This week's one thing

When we trust God more than our own understanding, He directs our path.

Opener: What's Hidden in the Soil?

one small cup or bowldirt or potting soilone dried bean or seed

Before the lesson, press a dried bean into a cup of soil until it is completely out of sight. Set the cup on the table and tell your family you have buried something inside. They get to ask yes/no questions to figure out what it is. Allow about 12 questions. When they guess or give up, turn the cup out onto a plate to reveal the seed. Then ask: 'Could the seed see what it was going to become? Did it need to see it to grow?'

The seed grows by trusting the soil and the sun it cannot see yet, and Proverbs 3:5-6 asks us to trust God the same way: with no guarantees visible ahead of time.

Scripture Story

A young man sits at his father's feet as the sun goes down over Jerusalem. The father leans forward and speaks quietly. 'Son, you are going to face decisions that feel too big for you. When that happens, remember two things.' He holds up his hand. 'Trust God with your whole heart. And stop trying to figure everything out on your own.' The son looks up. 'But what if I choose wrong?' The father smiles. 'If you put God first in every choice, He will make your path straight. He will show you where to go.' The son thinks about the last time he tried to handle something by himself. It did not go well. He nods slowly. 'How do I start?' His father puts a hand on his shoulder. 'Start with the decision right in front of you today. Ask Him before you ask yourself.' The son sits quietly for a moment, turning that over in his mind. What do you think the son was feeling when his father said those words?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • When you are not sure what to do, who do you usually ask for help?
  • Can you think of a time when someone older helped you make a good choice?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Proverbs 3:5 says to trust God with all your heart and not lean on your own understanding. What does that look like on a Tuesday at school when you have to make a quick decision and there is no time to pray?
  • Ecclesiastes 12:13 says that fearing God and keeping His commandments is the whole duty of a person. If that one sentence sums up everything, what does it leave out that you thought was important?

Teens

  • Ecclesiastes 1 says that everything a person can achieve or accumulate under the sun is vapor, here and then gone. If the Preacher is right, what does that change about the goals you are working toward right now, and what does it leave untouched?

This Week's Challenge

Each morning this week, before making any decision that feels hard or uncertain, each family member pauses and says out loud: 'I am going to ask God about this first.' Keep a running count on a sticky note on the fridge. On Sunday, share one moment when that pause changed what you did.

My Wisdom Tree

    Step 1: Draw the trunk and roots of a big tree. Write the words 'Trust in God' along the roots at the bottom.

    Step 2: Draw several branches spreading out from the trunk. On each branch, write or draw one good choice you want to make this week.

    Step 3: Tape your tree somewhere you will see it each morning, like your bedroom door or the bathroom mirror.

Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches that trusting God is the root that holds everything up, and good choices grow from that root the way branches grow from a strong trunk.
