I can trust the Lord when life feels scary.

Opener: Guess the Gospel Word

Tell the family, "I am thinking of a gospel word from this week's scriptures. You may only ask yes or no questions." Write the word "trust" on a paper where only you can see it. Let family members ask questions like, "Is it something you do?" or "Did Hezekiah show it?" Keep going until someone guesses the word, then ask, "What helped you figure it out?"

Hezekiah trusted the Lord when a powerful army threatened Jerusalem.

Scripture Story

King Hezekiah gets a frightening message. The king of Assyria has already conquered many places, and now his officer stands near Jerusalem and shouts to the people on the wall. He says, "Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord." The words are meant to scare everyone. Hezekiah does not answer with boasting or panic. He goes to the house of the Lord. He takes the letter from the enemy and spreads it before the Lord. Then he prays, "Lord God of Israel, save us" (see 2 Kings 19:14-19). During the night, the Lord protects Jerusalem. By morning, the Assyrian army is gone, and the proud king returns home. Hezekiah could not fix this problem by himself, but he knew where to turn first. What do you think Hezekiah was feeling when he spread the letter before the Lord?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • When you feel scared, who can you talk to?
  • What do you think Hezekiah did when he prayed?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Why do you think Hezekiah took the scary letter to the temple instead of hiding it or pretending it was fine?
  • What is one problem kids your age cannot solve alone, and how could trusting the Lord help?

Teens

  • How do you trust God when the situation does not change as fast as you want it to?

This Week's Challenge

Put a small bowl on the counter this week with slips of paper beside it. Each time someone in the family feels worried, writes a short prayer need on a slip and puts it in the bowl. On Sunday, read the slips you want to share and talk about where you saw help, peace, or strength from the Lord.

Roots of Trust Cup Tower

    Step 1: Draw and cut out several paper "roots" and write on them ways we trust the Lord, such as pray, obey, read scriptures, and ask for help.

    Step 2: Tape the roots to the table or floor, then build a tower of cups on top of the roots.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Gently test the tower by blowing on it or tapping the table, then talk about how roots help plants stand and trust in the Lord helps us stand.

Hezekiah stood firm because his trust in the Lord had deep roots.
