Family Activities

June 15–21 - 1 Samuel 17–18; 24–26; 2 Samuel 5–7

This week's one thing

When I trust the Lord, I can act with courage and keep my heart clean.

Opener: Yes or No: Guess the Doctrine

small paper slipspen or pencilbowl or cup

Before you start, write one word on each slip: "courage," "trust," "kindness," "revenge," "friends," and "covenant." Put them in a bowl. One person secretly draws a slip and answers only yes or no while everyone asks questions like, "Is it something you do with your body?" "Can you do it when you feel scared?" "Does it help you treat enemies better?" Keep going until the family guesses the word, then draw a second slip and repeat.

David shows courage, trust, friendship, and a clean heart when he lets the Lord fight his battles.

Scripture Story

Goliath stomps out and shouts, "Send me a man to fight!" The Israelite soldiers freeze. David shows up with bread and cheese for his brothers and hears the shouting. He says, "Who is this Philistine to talk about the armies of the living God?" Saul tries to put armor on David, but it hangs off him. David shakes his head and says he will go with what he knows. At the brook he picks five smooth stones and puts them in his bag. Goliath laughs, "Am I a dog, that you come with sticks?" David calls back, "The battle is the Lord's" (1 Samuel 17:47). David runs forward, swings his sling, and the stone strikes Goliath. The giant falls, and the Philistines run. What do you think David was feeling when he started running toward Goliath?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • If you had a sling, what would you practice hitting, a rock or a pillow?
  • When you feel scared, who can you ask to help you feel brave?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • David picked up stones and still trusted the Lord. What is something you can do and still trust God at the same time?
  • Why do you think David did not take Saul's armor, even though it looked safer?

Teens

  • David had a chance to end Saul's threat in the cave, but he chose restraint (1 Samuel 24:6). When does "I could" turn into "I should," and how do you decide in the moment?

This Week's Challenge

Put a cup on the counter labeled "Smooth Stones." Each time someone in the family does one brave thing this week and keeps their heart clean at the same time, like apologizing first or walking away from a fight, they add a pebble or a dried bean to the cup. Count them on Sunday and let everyone share one "stone moment."

Rooted Courage Cup

Ages 3-10~10 min
paper cup or small jardry beans or ricesmall piece of papertapepen or pencila small scrap of tissue or paper towel
  1. 1

Step 1: Tape the small paper to the cup and let your child draw a simple plant with roots, a stem, and leaves.

  2. 2

Step 2: Write one word on the label: "Trust." Pour beans or rice into the cup like "soil."

  3. 3

Step 3: Crumple the tissue into a tiny "seed" and tuck it into the beans. Each day this week, when someone does a brave, clean-hearted choice, add one more bean.

Trust in the Lord grows like roots, and it helps us stand steady when something feels big and scary.
