If a youth is teaching

Hand them this

Keep this Sunday's lesson open in Gospel Library the whole time. Start by having someone read the first paragraph, run the Purpose, Plan, Pause Board Race, then read Genesis 39:7–12 and 1 Corinthians 6:18–20 together, and skip the extra resources list. Save at least 4 minutes at the end to read Alma 42:29–31 about Corianton so everyone leaves knowing Christ's love is bigger than any mistake, then give the three-ways invitation.

Sunday: Purpose, Plan, Pause

Before Sunday, open this Sunday's lesson in the October For the Strength of Youth magazine (Third Sunday) and find the Purpose | Plan | Pause table. Read Genesis 39:7–12 and notice what Joseph did with his feet, not only his words. Ponder: what is one thing on your phone that helps your thoughts, and one thing that pulls them down?

Pick one opening

Opening question

Have everyone open this Sunday's lesson in Gospel Library. Ask someone to read the first paragraph out loud. Point to the four words it uses: trust, loyalty, creation, covenant family. Then ask: "Most people describe the law of chastity as a list of don'ts. This lesson describes it with those four words. What changes when you see it that way?" Let two or three people answer before moving on.

Interactive activity — pick one

7–8 minutes

Purpose, Plan, Pause Board Race

Materials: Chalkboard or whiteboard, chalk or markers, Gospel Library on phones

  1. 1.This activity comes from the lesson's question "How can you be chaste in your thoughts?" and its Purpose | Plan | Pause guidelines. Write PURPOSE, PLAN, and PAUSE as three columns on the board.
  2. 2.Split the class into two teams (with 3 youth, one team races the clock). Have someone read D&C 112:6, Alma 34:32, and D&C 101:16 out loud first, one per column.
  3. 3.Give teams 90 seconds per round. One person at a time runs up and writes a real, specific way a teenager could live that column (example: 'charge my phone outside my bedroom' for Plan). No repeats allowed.
  4. 4.After three rounds, have each team pick its best idea from each column and explain it in one sentence. The class votes on the most doable idea in each column.
  5. 5.Close by pointing to the lesson's suggestion to choose three ways to protect your thoughts this week. Have each youth pick three from the board in their head, with no writing needed.

Bring it back: How does taking charge of your technology make it easier to be pure in your thoughts, and how does that affect the way you treat the people around you?

Teach this first

The law of chastity: pure in thoughts and actions

Open this Sunday's lesson and have someone read the opening paragraph out loud. The law of chastity is about trust, loyalty, creation, and covenant family, and it covers thoughts, words, actions, and media choices. Then have someone read Article of Faith 13 and 1 Corinthians 6:18–20, and connect Paul's words "flee" and "ye are bought with a price" to Joseph's choice in Genesis 39:12.

Ask the class

  • 1.The thirteenth article of faith talks about seeking things that are 'virtuous and lovely.' How can you tell whether a song, show, or feed fits that description?
  • 2.How do your media choices affect your thoughts and your relationships, even when nobody else sees them?

If time remains

There is always a way back

Stay in this Sunday's lesson and read the section on forgiveness out loud. Then have volunteers read Alma 39:9–10 (or a few verses from 39:1–15) and Alma 42:29–31, and look at the hope Alma felt for his son Corianton, who later served faithfully (Alma 49:30).

Ask the class

  • 1.Satan wants people who have made mistakes to believe God has stopped loving them. What in Alma's words to Corianton shows that isn't true?

Close

The lesson invites you to choose three ways to protect your thoughts this week, like limiting screen time, choosing uplifting music, or avoiding a certain show. Pick your three before you leave, and use Purpose, Plan, or Pause at least once each day.

Your witness: Share briefly how the Savior has helped you keep your thoughts clean or come back after falling short. Keep the focus on Jesus Christ as the source of strength and forgiveness, not on personal details.
