If a youth is teaching

Hand them this

Keep this Sunday's lesson open in Gospel Library the whole time, and start by having someone read D&C 89:3 aloud. Run just one activity, either the Promise Hunt or Daniel's Ten-Day Test, and skip the other resources listed in the lesson. Close by having someone read D&C 89:18–21 aloud, then invite everyone to choose one promise to watch for this week.

Before Sunday

Send this to your class

Sunday: What does the Lord promise in D&C 89?

Open this Sunday's lesson in the For the Strength of Youth magazine and read the short intro about the Word of Wisdom. Then read Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21 on your own. The Lord calls it "a principle with promise." Which promise in those verses do you want most right now?

Pick one opening

Opening question

Have everyone open this Sunday's lesson in Gospel Library. Have someone read D&C 89:3 aloud. Point out the words "a principle with promise." Then ask: "Most rules just tell you what not to do. What changes when a commandment comes with a promise attached?" Take two or three answers. Don't correct anyone yet. Then say: "Today let's find out what the Lord actually promises."

Interactive activity — pick one

8–10 minutes

Promise Hunt Relay

Materials: Chalkboard or whiteboard, chalk or markers, Gospel Library on phones or scriptures

  1. 1.This is built on the lesson's first learning activity: read D&C 89 and list the principles and promises you find. Open this Sunday's lesson and read that prompt aloud.
  2. 2.Split the class into two teams (with 3 youth, make it partners against the teacher). Draw two columns on the board: PRINCIPLES and PROMISES.
  3. 3.Give the teams 4 minutes to search D&C 89. One runner at a time goes to the board and writes one item with its verse number, then tags the next runner. Examples from the lesson to get them started: walking in obedience (verse 18), avoiding excess (verse 12).
  4. 4.When time is up, read the lists together. Give a point for each correct verse. Give a bonus point if a team finds the promise in verses 20–21 and can say it in their own words.

Bring it back: Look at the PROMISES column. Which one would make the biggest difference for someone your age this week, and why?

Teach this first

The Word of Wisdom is a principle with promise

Open this Sunday's lesson and have someone read the opening description of the Word of Wisdom aloud. Then have someone read Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21. The Lord gave this law to help you care for your body and mind, stay free to choose, and keep close to the Spirit, and He attached promises to it.

Ask the class

  • 1.The lesson says the Word of Wisdom helps keep your mind clear so you can feel the Spirit more easily. What might that look like on an ordinary school day?
  • 2.Why do you think the Lord connects blessings for the body with blessings like wisdom and knowledge?

If time remains

Living it daily

If you have time, open this Sunday's lesson to the question "How can you live the Word of Wisdom daily?" and have someone read the short paragraph under it aloud.

Ask the class

  • 1.Beyond the things D&C 89 tells us to avoid, what everyday choices help you honor your body and stay close to the Spirit?

Last 3–5 minutes

Close

This week, reread Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21 and pick one promise. Each day, notice one choice you make that helps you care for your body and keep your mind clear so you can feel the Spirit.

Those who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience, will receive health and great treasures of knowledge, will run and not be weary, and will walk and not faint (Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21).

Your witness: Think of a time when keeping the Word of Wisdom, or watching someone you love keep it, brought freedom, clearer thinking, or closeness to the Spirit. Share it briefly and connect it back to Jesus Christ as the Giver of the promise.
