If a youth is teaching

Hand them this

Keep chapter 10 open the whole time and start by having someone read the first paragraph under Eternal Truths, then 1 Corinthians 6:19–20. Skip the Questions and Answers section in class, and if a hard personal question comes up, thank them and let an adult follow up privately. Save the last 4 minutes to open the Invitations and have everyone choose one, then close by sharing briefly what you believe about Jesus Christ helping us honor our bodies.

Sunday: Your body is sacred (chapter 10)

This Sunday we open For the Strength of Youth, chapter 10, "Your Body Is Sacred." Before class, read the first paragraph under Eternal Truths and 1 Corinthians 6:18–20. Come with Gospel Library open to chapter 10. Ponder: what would change about your week if you really saw your body as a temple?

Pick one opening

Opening question

Have everyone open Gospel Library to For the Strength of Youth, chapter 10. Ask one youth to read the first sentence under Eternal Truths out loud. Then ask: "The chapter says your body is in the image of the most glorious Being in the universe. Why do you think God wants you to know that before He gives you any standards about your body?" Let a few answer. Don't rush to fill the silence.

Truth Relay

Materials: Chalkboard or whiteboard, chalk or markers, Gospel Library phones

  1. 1.This builds on the first idea in this Sunday's lesson: choose an eternal truth to discuss and share thoughts or questions about it. Open chapter 10 to Eternal Truths and write three headings on the board: Image of God, Body and Spirit, Sacred Feelings.
  2. 2.Split the class into two teams (with 3 youth, play as one team against the clock). Each team lines up facing the board.
  3. 3.Say go. One at a time, a youth runs up and writes one thing under any heading: a phrase from the chapter, a thought, or an honest question. Then they hand off the marker. Phrases must actually come from chapter 10 or be a real question.
  4. 4.After 3 minutes, stop. Read the board aloud. Circle the best question and the phrase that surprised people most.

Bring it back: Looking at everything we wrote, which truth about your body do you think Satan most wants youth your age to forget, and why?

Teach this first

Your Body Is Sacred

Have someone read 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 out loud, then open chapter 10 and read the first paragraph under Eternal Truths. Paul teaches that your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost and that you were bought with a price; the chapter adds that your body is in God's image and that your experiences with it prepare you for a resurrected, glorified body. Christ paid the price, and He is also your strength to live this.

"Your body is in the image of God, the most glorious, majestic Being in the universe." (For the Strength of Youth)

Ask the class

  • 1.Paul says "ye are bought with a price." How does remembering what the Savior paid for you change how you see your own body?
  • 2.The chapter admits your body is not perfect now. How can someone honor their body as sacred on days they don't like how it looks or feels?

If time remains

Body and spirit are connected

If time allows, stay in chapter 10 and have someone read the second paragraph under Eternal Truths, then Doctrine and Covenants 88:15. Then read the Word of Wisdom promised blessing about clear thinking and personal revelation.

Ask the class

  • 1.When have you noticed that how you care for your body (sleep, food, what you take in) affected how easily you could feel the Spirit?

Last 3–5 minutes

Close

Have everyone open chapter 10 to Invitations and read the three bold headings silently. Ask each youth to choose one (treat your body and others' bodies with respect, do things that strengthen your body, or keep sex and sexual feelings sacred) and quietly decide one specific thing they will do this week to live it. Invite a few to share if they want to; no one has to.

The chapter promises that living the law of chastity brings God's approval and personal spiritual power, and that your confidence will grow as you live as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Your witness: Think of a time when caring for your body, or choosing a higher standard than people around you, brought you closer to the Spirit or to Jesus Christ. Share briefly what you learned and how He was your strength, and remind the class that the Savior's help is for everyone, including anyone who has struggled.
