Rejoicing in Our Redeemer

Week Overview

And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Isaiah 25:9

This week, as we celebrate Christmas, we turn our hearts to the joy of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. The Old Testament prophets, long before His birth, anticipated His coming with hope and gladness, knowing He would deliver them from captivity and sin. Just as they rejoiced, we too can find joy in the Savior who came to bear our griefs and heal our wounds. Christmas is a time to remember that He is not only the Deliverer of ancient Israel but also the One who saves us personally today. Let’s focus this week on the symbols, titles, and prophecies that point to Christ. As we prepare to study His life in the New Testament next year, may we carry this joy in our hearts.

Hope in the Messiah

Hope

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.

Isaiah 61:1

The Old Testament is filled with a spirit of eager anticipation for the Messiah, a Deliverer who would bring hope to those in captivity. Isaiah’s words remind us of the Savior’s mission to heal the brokenhearted and free us from the chains of sin. This promise was fulfilled when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and it continues to be fulfilled in our lives as we turn to Him. During this Christmas week, we can reflect on the hope He brings, no matter our struggles or challenges. His birth was a symbol of renewal, a reminder that better days are ahead. Let’s hold onto that hope as we celebrate His coming.

Symbols of Our Savior

Worship

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1

Christmas is a time when symbols like stars and lights remind us of Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, many symbols pointed to the Savior, such as light, which represents His guidance and strength in our lives. Psalm 27:1 teaches us that the Lord is our light and salvation, a beacon in times of fear or uncertainty. As we decorate our homes or see Christmas lights this season, we can remember that Christ illuminates our path. These symbols are not just decorations; they are invitations to worship Him. Let’s use them to turn our hearts to the true meaning of Christmas.

Names of the Savior

Identity

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Jesus Christ is known by many names and titles, each revealing a unique aspect of His divine identity. Isaiah 9:6 lists some of these powerful titles, such as Wonderful, Counsellor, and Prince of Peace, reminding us of His roles in our lives. During Christmas, as we sing carols or read scriptures, we can reflect on what these names mean to us personally. Does He feel like a Counsellor when we seek His guidance? Or a Prince of Peace when we find comfort in His presence? Let’s celebrate His identity by recognizing the many ways He blesses us.

Delivered by His Love

Deliverance

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4–5

Christmas is a celebration of the ultimate act of deliverance—Jesus Christ coming to earth to save us. Isaiah prophesied that He would bear our griefs and carry our sorrows, offering healing through His sacrifice. This promise reminds us that no pain or sin is beyond His reach; He has felt it all for us. As we exchange gifts or gather with loved ones this week, let’s remember the greatest gift of all—His willingness to be wounded for us. His birth in a humble stable marked the beginning of our deliverance. May we feel His healing power in our lives today.

Gift of a Savior

Grace

He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah 25:8

At Christmas, we often think of gifts, but the greatest gift is Jesus Christ, given to us by Heavenly Father. Isaiah reminds us that through the Savior, death is overcome, tears are wiped away, and shame is removed. This gift of grace means we are never alone in our struggles—He is always there to lift us. As we wrap presents or enjoy holiday traditions, let’s pause to consider the eternal gift of our Savior. His birth brought the promise of victory over all pain and loss. Let’s rejoice in the grace that saves us.
