The Lord comforts His people and never forgets them, even when they feel forgotten.

Opener: The Candle in the Dark Room

candlematches or a lightera room you can darken

Turn off the lights and let everyone sit for a moment in the dark, then ask how it feels to not see the person next to you. Light one candle in the middle of the room and ask what changed. Say, "Isaiah wrote to people who felt lost in the dark, and the Lord promised to be their light."

One small light changes a whole dark room, just as the Lord's comfort reaches people who feel far from Him.

Scripture Story

Isaiah's people are tired and sad. Their enemies are strong, and they think God has forgotten them. Isaiah stands up and says, "Comfort, comfort my people! The hard part is almost over." He tells them something wonderful. "Look up at the sky. Who made all those stars? God did, and He knows every single one by name." Then Isaiah says the part they need most. "Can a mother forget her own baby? Even if she could, God will never forget you. He has written your name on His hands." The people are worn out and afraid. Isaiah tells them, "If you wait on the Lord, He will make you strong again. You will run and not get tired. You will walk and not faint." What do you think the people were feeling when Isaiah told them God had written their names on His hands?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • When you feel scared or sad, who helps you feel better?
  • What is something Heavenly Father made that you love to look at?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Isaiah said God knows every star by name. What does it tell you that He also knows your name?
  • What is something that makes you tired or worn out, and how could the Lord help you keep going?

Teens

  • The people felt God had forgotten them, but He hadn't. How do you tell the difference between God being silent and God being absent?

This Week's Challenge

Each night this week, write on a slip of paper one way you saw God's help that day, even a small one. Read all the slips together on Sunday.

    Step 1: Trace your hand on paper and cut it out.

    Step 2: Write your name in the palm, then write the names of people you love around it.

    Step 3: Tape your paper hand where you'll see it and remember God wrote your name on His hands too.

God said He has graven us on the palms of His hands, so we are always in His care (Isaiah 49:16).
