When I turn to Jesus Christ, He delivers me and gives me strength to do what I cannot do alone.

Opener: The Group Project Meltdown

Say: "You are in a group project, and one person stops showing up. The deadline is tomorrow." Ask everyone to choose one move: cover for them, call them out in the group chat, ask the teacher for help, or ask the group to meet and reset. Write the choices on paper and let each person pick one and say why. Then ask: "When do we do the spiritual version of this, trying to carry it alone until we finally ask for help?"

Israel kept cycling between trouble and rescue, and the lesson is to turn to the Lord sooner instead of muscling through alone.

Scripture Story

Gideon is hiding, trying to thresh wheat where no one will see him. An angel speaks: "The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour" (Judges 6:12). Gideon looks around like, "Me?" He says, "If the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us?" (Judges 6:13). The Lord answers, "Surely I will be with thee" (Judges 6:16). Later, Gideon gathers an army, but the Lord says there are too many. The number shrinks until only three hundred remain. Gideon still goes, holding a trumpet and a lamp, and the Lord delivers Israel. Gideon learns what it feels like when God’s help is bigger than your resources. What do you think Gideon was feeling when he looked at his tiny group and heard, "Surely I will be with thee"?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • When you feel scared, who do you like to ask for help first?
  • If you could hold a lamp like Gideon, where would you want the Lord to help you this week?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Why do you think the Lord asked Gideon to use a smaller army instead of a bigger one? (Judges 7:2)
  • When do you feel tempted to hide like Gideon, and what helps you come back out?

Teens

  • Israel keeps repeating the same cycle: sin, trouble, crying to the Lord, and deliverance (Judges 2:18; Judges 3:9). What does that pattern look like in real life today, and how can you interrupt it earlier without pretending you are fine?

This Week's Challenge

Make a small paper "deliverer chain" this week. Each time someone turns to the Lord for help before things blow up, like praying before a test, apologizing quickly, or asking for a blessing, add one paper link with the date and a two word label. Read the links together on Sunday.

Rubber Band Rescue Chain

Ages 3-10~10 min

    Step 1: Hook rubber bands together into a chain long enough to reach from the table into a cup on the floor.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Put a spoon or fork in the cup. Let kids try to "rescue" it by catching it with the rubber band chain and lifting it out.

  3. 3

    Step 3: On paper, draw one rubber band link and write one way we can connect to Jesus Christ this week, like pray, read one verse, or say sorry fast.

When we stay connected to the Lord, He strengthens us and can lift us out of trouble like a deliverer (Judges 3:9).
