Open Week 12 in App →Week 12 (March 16–22): Genesis 42–50 — “God Meant It unto Good”
Opening Connection (2–3 minutes)
Bring a small bandage (or a paper “bandage” you cut beforehand). Ask: “When you get a cut, does it feel better right away, or does it take time to heal?” Explain: “Today we’ll learn how forgiveness helps families heal—like a bandage helps a cut heal.”
Connect to their world: “Sometimes brothers, sisters, or friends hurt our feelings. Heavenly Father can help us forgive.”
Scripture Discovery (10–12 minutes)
Tell the children: “Joseph’s brothers had hurt him terribly long ago. But later, Joseph chose love and forgiveness.”
Do a simple “Scripture Treasure Hunt” on the board: write three words as headings—Love, Forgive, God’s Help.
- Read together: Genesis 50:20 (teacher reads aloud from the bundle phrase)
- Point out the key phrase: “God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Ask: “What do you think it means that God can bring good after something hard?”
- Briefly summarize the reunion moment using the bundle’s guidance: Joseph “forgave them” and helped his family (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, “March 16–22. ‘God Meant It unto Good’: Genesis 42–50”).
Ask: “If you were Joseph, what would be hard about forgiving?”
As children answer, write their ideas under the headings (Love/Forgive/God’s Help).
Core Gospel Principles (5–6 minutes)
- Forgiveness brings healing. The bundle teaches: “Forgiveness brings healing.” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, Genesis 45; 50:15–21 section heading).
- God can help us find meaning in trials. Joseph could look back and see, “God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20; see also the bundle heading “God can help me find meaning in my trials.”).
- Joseph points us to Jesus Christ. The bundle teaches: “In many ways, Joseph was like Jesus Christ… He offers forgiveness” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, introduction).
Interactive Learning Activities (3 activities, different types, 20–25 minutes total)
Activity 1: “Family Reunion Freeze-Frames” (Role-Play & Acting)
Materials: Simple props (optional): a scarf for Joseph, paper “grain” bags, name tags.
Steps:
- Assign roles: Joseph, brothers, and a narrator.
- Tell the story in 3 “freeze” scenes:
- Scene A: Brothers arrive needing food (Genesis 42–44, summarized).
- Scene B: Joseph reveals who he is (Genesis 45, summarized).
- Scene C: Joseph forgives and helps his family (Genesis 45; Genesis 50:20 idea).
- After each freeze, ask the class:
- “What feelings do you see on their faces?”
- “What could Joseph choose to do? What did he choose?”
Connection to scripture: Helps children “reenact the story of Joseph reuniting his family” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, “Teaching Children: I can show love and forgiveness to my family.”).
Discussion questions:
- “Why do you feel Joseph forgave his brothers?” (bundle question)
- “How do you think Joseph’s brothers felt when they found out Joseph had forgiven them?” (bundle question)
Activity 2: “Joseph & Jesus Match-Up Chart” (Game)
Materials: Board or paper chart with two columns: Joseph / Jesus Christ; four reference cards (just the citations).
Steps:
- Put the four scripture pairs on separate cards (citations only):
- Genesis 37:3 / Matthew 3:17
- Genesis 37:26–28 / Matthew 26:14–16
- Genesis 45:5–7 / Luke 4:18
- Genesis 47:12 / John 6:35
- Mix them up and have children come up and place matching pairs together.
- Read the bundle’s instruction: “Help your children search the following pairs of scriptures and fill in the chart with things that Joseph and Jesus have in common” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, “Teaching Children: Heavenly Father sent Jesus Christ to save me.”).
Connection to scripture: Reinforces that Joseph’s life points to the Savior (bundle introduction).
Discussion questions:
- “What does it mean to save or rescue someone?” (bundle question)
- “How did Joseph save his brothers?” (see Genesis 42:1–3; 45:5–7, as cited in the bundle)
Activity 3: “Bandage of Forgiveness Craft” (Hands-On Crafts)
Materials: Paper “bandage” strips (rectangles), crayons, tape (optional).
Steps:
- Give each child a paper bandage.
- On the bandage, have them write: “God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
- On the back, they write one simple action of forgiveness they can try this week (examples: “use kind words,” “share,” “say sorry,” “pray for help”).
- If appropriate, they can tape it to a paper heart or keep it in their scriptures.
Connection to scripture: Forgiveness brings healing (bundle heading).
Discussion questions:
- “What can you do to invite the Savior’s healing power into that situation?” (Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: Old Testament 2026, Genesis 45; 50:15–21 section)
- “If forgiving seems hard, what hope do you find in Joseph’s story?” (Genesis 50:20)
Life Application Bridge (3–4 minutes)
Ask: “Where do you need forgiveness most—at home, at school, or with friends?”
Use a quick thumbs-up practice: “Thumbs up if this would help healing: saying ‘I’m sorry,’ listening, praying, choosing not to get revenge.”
Remind them: Joseph’s choice to forgive helped his whole family. The bundle teaches Joseph “forgave them” and saw God’s purpose: “God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Testimony Time (2–3 minutes)
Invite children to quietly think, then share (if they want): “What did you learn today about forgiveness and healing?”
Share a simple testimony tied strictly to the lesson’s truths: I know the Lord can help us forgive and heal, and I’m grateful Joseph’s story teaches that God can bring good even after hard experiences—“God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Take-Home Challenge
This week, choose one family relationship to strengthen. Use your “bandage of forgiveness” reminder and do one act of love or forgiveness. If you feel stuck, remember the scripture phrase: “God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Teacher Tips
- If role-play gets noisy, assign “freeze” signals (hands up = freeze) so children refocus quickly.
- For children who struggle with reading, let them be prop helpers or “feelings detectives” during freeze-frames—still fully participating without pressure.
