December 29–January 4 - Introduction to the Old Testament

This week's one thing

Jesus Christ is in the Old Testament, and God makes covenants with His children.

Opener: Yes or No: What Book Am I?

paperpen

Write "Old Testament" on one paper and "New Testament" on another, then fold them and put them in a cup. One person draws a paper and keeps it secret. Everyone else asks only yes-or-no questions to figure out which one it is, like "Do you have Jesus in you?" and "Do you have covenants?" After 6 to 10 questions, everyone guesses, then reveal the paper and talk for one minute about which clues helped.

The Old Testament can feel unfamiliar, but it still points us to Jesus Christ and to God’s covenants.

Scripture Story

Moses is out in the desert, watching sheep, thinking it will be a normal day. Then he sees a bush on fire, and it keeps burning without turning to ash. Moses walks closer. God calls, "Moses, Moses." Moses answers, "Here am I." God says, "Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground" (Exodus 3:5). Moses listens as God explains He has heard His people and will send Moses to help. Moses asks, "Who shall I say sent me?" God says, "I AM THAT I AM" (Exodus 3:14). Moses stands there, barefoot on the sand, hearing that God knows His name and has work for him. What do you think Moses was feeling when God said his name out loud?

Discussion Questions

Little Kids (ages 4–7)

  • If you saw a bush on fire that did not burn up, what would you do first?
  • When do you feel like a place is special or holy, like church or your room when you pray?

Big Kids (ages 8–11)

  • Why do you think God asked Moses to take off his shoes before they talked? What does that show about how Moses should act?
  • Moses had a job to do that felt big. What is one "big" thing for your age that you want God’s help with?

Teens

  • Moses meets God in a normal workday, not in a temple. What helps you notice God in the middle of regular life, and what makes it harder?

This Week's Challenge

Pick one covenant-related promise your family can keep for seven days, and track it on the fridge with check marks: daily prayer as a family, or one quiet scripture verse each day. On Sunday, talk about what changed in your home when you kept the promise.

Covenant Seed Cups

Ages 3-10~10 min
paper cupsdry beans or lentilspaper towelwatermarker
  1. 1

Step 1: Write each child’s name on a paper cup with a marker, then fold a paper towel and tuck it inside the cup.

  2. 2

Step 2: Add 2 to 4 beans between the cup and the paper towel, then pour in a little water so the towel is damp, not swimming.

  3. 3

Step 3: Put the cups by a window and check them each day, adding a small splash of water when the towel dries.

Covenants grow in us the way seeds grow: they start small, then strengthen as we keep our promises to God.
